Review of the updated BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015: technical characteristics, the cost of the cheapest configuration and a photo review.

The BMW 5 Gran Turismo recently received an update, but apart from looks, how are the 2013 and 2015 models different from each other?

Exterior BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 2015

BMW acknowledged that the rear end of Gran Turismo 2013 was awkward, and the facelift corrected that shortcoming. Gone are the big round headlights and the rectangular trunk lid. Visually, the body has slightly decreased in size due to smooth lines. An attentive observer will notice that the changes mainly affected only the headlights: the front ones have acquired a more contoured appearance, and the rear ones have a characteristic bend.

External differences can also be due to the features of the equipment. Some of the packages (such as the BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015 M Sport) include redesigned front bumpers and side air intakes. Along with this, the GT gets larger wheels and a stiffer suspension.

Interior of New BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015

The interior gives the impression that the 2015 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo does not really belong to the 5 but to the 7 series. This is partly true: this model is based on the flagship chassis of BMW 7. There is ample room in front and behind. If the Executive Package is purchased, the rear seats will be tailor-made. They can comfortably accommodate four passengers. Even as standard, the seats, both front and rear, can be moved back and forth and tilted. The high seating position is characteristic of all models of the new BMW 5 Series, as is the shape of the instrument panel, which slopes towards the windscreen.

Gran Turismo 2015 is not your typical "five", it is a "chameleon" that combines many styles. It is intended for people who want to have a roomy, like in a SUV, interior, but at the same time the vehicle's ground clearance does not have to be high.

You can fully experience all the advantages of this model only from the rear seats. To be honest, even the X5 seems cramped by comparison. Probably the reason lies in the panoramic roof, but even without it, hardly anyone in the cabin of the BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015 can overtake an attack of claustrophobia.

There is not much room for luggage in the 2015 BMW 5 Gran Turismo. With the rear seats folded out, the luggage compartment is limited to 500 liters. But if you move the rear seats as far forward as possible, you will add another 60 liters. However, with the seats folded down, the luggage space increases to a maximum of 1,750 liters.

The boot lid can be opened in different ways. In most cases, the luggage compartment is fully opened for loading and unloading the machine, the lifting height of the lid is adjustable in five positions. But sometimes the driver can open the trunk in the same way as it is done on sedans.

Dimensions of the updated model BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo 2015:

  • body length - 5004 mm;
  • width - 2140 mm;
  • wheelbase - 3070 mm;
  • weight - 2120 kg.

A long body can make it difficult to navigate narrow streets. The side and rearview field is limited and the GT side mirrors are small. For this reason, it is necessary to use all-round cameras and Adaptive Drive.

There are five modes to control the suspension. Of these, Comfort + is the most popular. In addition, there are Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport and Sport + modes. Thanks to the choice of one mode or another, the BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015 behaves as expected on the road. Passengers can plunge into a state of "Zen", because the suspension "works" all the irregularities of the road surface. Driving will also be a pleasure for the driver. The ZF 8-speed automatic transmission will shift smoothly and discreetly.

2015 BMW 5 Gran Turismo Main Features and Options

The GT engine compartment houses a 3-liter diesel engine with 258 hp. and a torque of 560 nm. The new BMW 5 did not strive to make the 2015 Gran Turismo neither the fastest nor the most economical car, although both figures are quite acceptable compared to the competition.

In the urban cycle, the fuel consumption of the 2015 BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo will be 11 l / 100 km, while on the highway this figure will be 7.5 l / 100 km. To achieve optimal values, you need to choose a complete set with a 6-cylinder engine. In general, the GT 5 Series lineup is equipped with diesel engines, starting with the 2 liter version. However, for a car as massive as the 2015 BMW 5 Gran Turismo, such an engine is not the best choice.

Your best bet is the 4.4L V8 550i (450hp, 650Nm of torque). For Europe, the ideal choice is the 3L 530d; for the US, the 535i. The 530d engine will allow the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.2 seconds, whether it has xDrive or not. A 535i with a capacity of 300 hp. and a torque of 400 Nm will be slower than the previous version by only 0.1 seconds.

Even entry-level models with 535i engines are equipped with digital controls and an iDrive touchscreen controller. Other standard options are rain sensors, Hi-Fi audio speakers, dark wood trim, leather seats, panoramic roof, climate control, parking system, adaptive lighting system, Bluetooth audio streaming, USB support, etc. ...

You can put any additional systems on the car, up to Night Vision, soft-closing doors and a rear-seat entertainment center. However, the model "charged" to the maximum will cost over $ 100 thousand, and this is already too expensive.

Security

As standard, the BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015GT 5 Series is equipped with two frontal airbags with two-stage deployment, two chest airbags for the front passengers, two airbags for head protection, anti-lock brakes, stability control, cornering braking control, emergency braking control system and even adaptive brake lights.

Conclusion

It is very difficult to carve out a niche for the 2015 BMW 5 Gran Turismo. This model is unique. BMW engineers have tried to achieve the optimal balance of space, passenger comfort and luxury finishes, taking into account the fact that this is a sedan and it must have its own dynamics.

BMW has a rich lineup - there is also the Touring 5 Series and the X5. Touring is more dynamic. It is cheaper and is almost the same size as the GT in terms of trunk volume. Only there is much less comfort in it. The BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015 is capable of serious competition with the X5 model. In any case, if a crossover car is not needed, then there is no better GT 5 Series in the current BMW lineup.

Buy a new BMW 5 Gran Turismo 2015 in the minimum configuration in Germany at a price of € 52,300, and in the USA - for $ 60,700.
