How to understand that you need to replace the oil seal of the rear axle gearbox

To begin with, it is worth understanding what an oil seal is. If you look at it, you can see that it is just a rubber ring of a special shape, which is reinforced on the outside with a steel rim, and inside with a small spring. This spring should increase the elasticity of the gland. A prerequisite for maintaining the performance of the stuffing box is its softness. As soon as the oil seal is dubbed, it ceases to perform its functions.

In order to understand that the oil seal needs to be replaced, you need to look under the car. If you need to replace the oil seal of the rear axle gearbox, then the gearbox itself will be in oil, moreover, it will not drip from it, but only will be a fat black spot. Unfortunately, it is almost impossible to determine the need to replace the seals of the axle shafts without removing the brake drums. Of course, you can look at the brake pad protectors from the reverse side, but this indicator is not accurate, since the leak may not be oil, but brake fluid.

The first thing to get before carrying out this procedure is a torque wrench. After replacement, adjustment of the shank will be required, and without this tool it is almost impossible, especially without experience. Another important tool is the puller. Without it, without having the proper skill, it is quite problematic to remove the old oil seal. Installing a new one is very easy. A small piece of wood will come in handy for this.

So let's get started. The first thing to do is remove the propeller shaft. To do this, unscrew 4 nuts with a 13 wrench and remove the fastening bolts. Then, with a sharp movement, pull the propeller shaft down. Next, we take the head 24 and unscrew the central nut. it is advisable to hang out one wheel in order to fix it.

In order to remove the old oil seal, you will need a screwdriver, as well as some kind of angled object. In this case, it is advisable to grind special grips from plates 1–2 mm thick.

The installation of a new rear axle gearbox oil seal is quite easy, the only thing worth paying special attention to is the alignment of the drive shaft and the center of the oil seal. If this is not taken into account, then the oil seal will go crooked, after which it will become oval, respectively, the benefit from such an object in the car is nullified.

In principle, there is nothing difficult in assembling, you just need to take into account the tightening torque of the central nut, which is 155 - 277 Nm.

Things are a little more complicated here, since more details will have to be removed. First you need to remove the wheel, of course you need to hang it out in advance. It is convenient to put some bars or chocks under the shock absorbers to the rear axle.

After that, we remove the brake drum, for which we unscrew the two latches and tighten them with gentle movements. In no case should you use an iron hammer for this, since the brake drum is made of aluminum, and it crumbles easily.

After the brake drum has been removed, a 17 socket wrench will come in handy. Moreover, its length should be at least 5-7 centimeters. If it is shorter, it will not be possible to reach the required nuts. If you look closely at the axle shaft, you can see two holes in it, which are specially designed for just such a key.

First, unscrew the two nuts, then turn the axle shaft 90 degrees and unscrew the remaining two nuts. Then, with a sharp movement, pull the axle shaft out of the rear axle gearbox. It should be clarified that the axle shaft can sit firmly in the gearbox, so it is not always easy to get it out. If there are any difficulties, then the semiaxis should be turned in different directions with sharp movements. Thus, we will disengage the semiaxis and the differential.

This is followed by the replacement of the semiaxis oil seal. In general, at the very beginning, it would be nice to drain the oil from the gearbox housing a little so that its surplus does not pour over the bridge when we remove the oil seal. Well, if they didn't, then it's okay.
